How to apply

Please read all the information carefully on how to apply, to give your application the best chance of success.

Online application forms will only be available during the dates above, an outline of each of the positions and the link to apply can be found in the Apply Now section

Applications for ALL employment for the 2018 season must be submitted online within the recruitment dates. Treble Cone will not accept any applications outside the recruitment dates.

For your application we will require the following:

We will need you to fill out all the compulsory information on the online form.

Write us a cover letter in the space provided. A covering letter is a letter introducing yourself and is your chance to capture our attention and tell us why you would make a great member of the team

We will need contact details for two relevant employers that we may contact for the purpose of your application.

We need a job specific CV to be attached. Make sure it details your work history. A CV or resume is a concise summary of your education, experience and achievements. Applications without both of these will not be considered.

what happens after i have applied?

When we receive your application we will send you an email confirmation. Please check your junk email folder and add us as a safe sender to keep updated otherwise you might miss out!

You can then expect to hear from us again typically within 2 weeks after the closing date of the position you have applied for.

Position closing dates vary so don't worry if you haven't heard and your friends have - we will attempt to respond to your application as soon as we can.

Within two weeks of the recruitment period closing we will be in contact with you regarding the status of your application. At this time those people who have been successful with the initial application will be offered an interview.

A week after the Interviews you will either be sent an offer of a job or be advised that you have unfortunately been unsuccessful.

By the end of May, employment information and agreements will be sent to all successful applicants.

will i need to come to wanaka for an interview?

If you are successfully short listed then we would love to interview you! Please note: for most roles we prefer to conduct interviews in person so check the Key Dates on our website for when you should plan to be available.

If you have applied for a role that has a lot of guest interaction then meeting us in person gives you the best chance to show us how you can make our guests happy.

In most cases, depending on the role the interviews will take place between end of February through to early May 2018.

If you can't attend an interview, we will be able to offer you an interview via Skype or similar platform depending on the role, and these will be scheduled at the same time as the face to face interviews.

if i'm successful - what happens next?

If you are offered a position we will require an answer within a week of the offer. To accept a position, you will need to sign the Job Offer Letter which will be emailed to you. Once this is signed you will receive your Employee Agreement that you will need to read and also sign.

If these documents are not signed and returned by the dates specified, the position offer may be removed and will be offered to another applicant.

You will then be required to provide some more information regarding visa requirements, proof of qualifications and experience etc. You will also receive regular e-mails updating you on pre-season training, visas, police vetting etc.

how long would i have a job for?

Our scheduled opening date for the 2018 winter season is 28 June 2018. Most staff start paid training the week prior to opening day and generally finish on closing day which is 23rd September. Some staff start earlier or finish later than these dates as extra prep or cleaning is necessary. You will generally work 4 to 5 days a week; about 6-8 hours a day. Hours or shifts may be altered due to guest demand during our busy and quiet times.

Some positions will be required to start work at 6:00am some 7:00 am but most will start at 8:00 am. Transport leaves Wanaka about an hour before your scheduled start time.

how do i learn what is expected of me on the job?

Our Training programme will prepare you for a fantastic season and teach you all you need to know about your job and working for Treble Cone

Your training starts before your first day on the mountain, Treble Cone works with Skills Active Aotearoa, the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) for the snow sports industry in NZ to provide qualifications to all staff. All new employees take part in a nationally recognised qualification programme, which is run by the resort & assessed by our supervisors. This programme is compulsory and must be completed over the season.

A one-week induction will follow the start date. The induction includes company, department and health and safety training in preparation for opening day. Your training will then continue through the season and will mainly be done on the job with support from your Supervisor.

can i start the season late?

In most circumstances, we prefer to hire people that are available to attend our pre-season training. However there are situations when additional staffing is required once the season has kicked off. For applicants that cannot start employment until after the season has started, please make it very clear on your application that this is the case (and provide the date you are able to start) and this will be dealt with on a case by case basis by the supervisor of the relevant department.

why can't i find the position i wish to apply for?

We like to see as many of our team members return year after year so we invite high performing team members to return though a priority application process. All going well, once you start working for us and you wish to return the following season, there is no need to go through the whole recruitment process again next year!

We don't always have vacancies in every department. If a full team decides to return, then we have no need to advertise. So if you cannot see the position as an option on the application form then no vacancies exist within this department.

i'm happy to do any kind of ski job, what should i apply for?

Take a good long look at the website information and the positions available then ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I want to work inside or outside?
  • Am I willing to work early mornings or night shifts?
  • Do I have any previous experience in an area we are recruiting for?
  • I have never worked in the ski industry, what experience can I contribute from other industries?
  • Which job sparks my interest?
  • Can I ski or snowboard? Some positions will require a specific level of skill/experience and others will require none. These requirements are clearly listed in the position descriptions

overseas applicants - how do i get a work visa? Can treble cone help me?

You must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand. You will need to supply proof of your eligibility or a valid work visa. Treble Cone does not apply for work permits for General mountain positions.

There are some exceptions. We may apply for visas for more specialised qualified roles and only if we are unable to fill this position with a candidate legally entitled to work in New Zealand

New Zealand Immigration has very strict rules in place regarding visa sponsorship to which we must adhere to. We are only able to sponsor applicants with a job offer that have snow sports industry qualifications or experience.

The roles that may be considered for sponsorship are our more highly skilled roles and you will need the appropriate qualifications and experience to be eligible.

In all cases, whether it is a working holiday or sponsorship visa, you must supply evidence of your work visa before you can commence employment. Your offer of employment is conditional upon you supplying us with proof that you are eligible to work in New Zealand.

For information about the various types of work visas that may be available to you depending on your personal circumstances, please visit

Australian citizens and residents are legally entitled to work in New Zealand. You do not need a work visa but you will need to show a valid Australian passport on arrival.

should i apply if my work visa is not valid to end of the season?

We may consider applicants that have a valid work visa that ends part way through the season, this will depend on the position you apply for. General roles in Guest Services, Rentals and Food & Beverage are more likely to have shorter length positions.  This is up to the discretion of the department supervisor to which you are applying. It is helpful to us if this is identified in your application so that you can be considered for the most suitable role.

I really want to work for you! Can i improve my chances by applying more than once

No, please only submit one application.

By putting in more than one application you slow down the whole process for everyone. If you do apply more than once it will work against you rather than for you, as it suggests you can't follow instructions, which is very important in our industry.

Please do not email your application directly. We get thousands of applications in a very short amount of time and our online system is the only way we can successfully manage the large volume. Find out more and apply for all positions on the Apply Now page.

police vetting

It is New Zealand law that states all people working with children must be vetted by the New Zealand Police. If you work in the Ski and Snowboard School or Rentals department you will be sent a form to fill out with your agreement. Before you are able to start work the police vetting form needs to be completed and signed by you and processed by the NZ Police.
