Team TC - CHILdren's Development Programmes 2018

Welcome to the 2018 winter season at Treble Cone. The Team TC development programmes will include ski race, freeride, snowboarding and freeski training.

They are made up of the Team TC Race Programme and the Team TC Freeride Programme. We have a part time and full time programmes on offer.  Each of the schedules have optional extras available to suit your needs.

 Team tc - race programme 2018 

The Team TC full time race development programme runs for up to 13 weeks, up to 5 days per week. This is for junior ski race athletes aiming to compete in the NZ Interfield and/or the NZ Youth Series.

Team TC Race programme will develop the technical and tactical skiing skills needed to race SL, GS, and SG. The programme will build on fundamental skills in free skiing and gate training, offering a programme to support athlete’s needs to ski race up through the U16 level.

Schedule

Team TC schedule will start with an information evening where parents can meet the coaches, collect uniforms and ask questions. The on-snow training will kick off the first day of the School Holidays at 9am on the Platter lift.

Training Groups


U14/U16   NZ Youth Series Team     Year of Birth: 2003, 2004 (U16), 2005, 2006 (U14).

  • Full Time programme – up to 5 days a week, Wednesday to Sunday with flexibility with weather and event schedules
  • Begins at the start of NZ school holidays 7 July 2018. Runs through NZYS finals late September
  • Full coaching support at South Island NZYS races, Cardrona, Mount Hutt and The Remarkables
  • Guest racers for short term training at Head Coach’s approval only
  • Includes uniform
  • Equipment: Athletes must have legal GS and SL skis and protective equipment. SG skis are optional as are powder skis

U10/U12/U14   NZ Interfield Team      Year of Birth: 2009-10 (U10), 2007-08 (U12), 2005-06 (U14).Full time programme - up to 4 days a week

  • Begins with NZ school holidays 7 July 2018. Runs through Interfield Finals mid September
  • Full coaching support at Southern District Interfield races. All participants are expected to race
  • Participants demonstrating the commitment and skill will have the opportunity to ‘train up’ with the U14/U16 NZYS group
  • Guest racers for short term training at Head Coach’s approval only
  • Includes uniform
  • Equipment: U10’s can use a multi event race ski, carving ski, or junior GS ski. No fat skis or twin tips. U12’s should have a junior GS ski or a multi event ski.
  • Slalom skis are optional as are powder skis. U14’s should have GS skis for developing proper skills, however Interfield races are normally Kinder Kombi races where slalom skis seem to work better for U14’s. Anyone expecting to ‘train up’ with the U14/U16 NZYS must have GS and slalom skis with protective slalom gear (face guard, pole guards, shin guards).

Team TC Development Team U8s and U10s    Year of Birth:  2011-12 (U8), 2009-10 (U10).Weekend programme (1 to 2 days)

  • Begins after NZ School Holidays
  • Focus is on skill development
  • Race participation is encouraged
  • Does not include uniform, team hoodies and jackets can be purchased at additional costs
  • Equipment: Multi event or junior race skis work best for developing children. Please stay clear of fat skis and twin tips. Proper boot fit is a must.

Coaches


Head Coach Michael Shenkel

Mike Shenkel will be in his 24th season at Treble Cone in 2018. TC is his favourite mountain some of his other favourite hills include Taos, New Mexico, Crystal Mountain in Washington State, Sandpoint Idaho and Mammoth Mountain CA, all in the USA.
Mike holds the USSA National Coach Level 400 and PSIA Level 3 qualifications and has had a long career of ski race coaching in both New Zealand and the States. He has 72 seasons under his belt; he loves leading the team of coaches and also seeing the progression and growth of the kids both on and off snow.

Other coaches include Sam Garnett, Jan Trow and Calum McAlister.

team tc freeride PROGRAMME 

The Team TC Freeride is a development programme runs for up to 12 weeks, up to 3 days per week. This is for junior freeride athletes aiming to compete in the NZ freeride youth events.
Team TC Freeride programme will develop the technical and tactical skiing skills needed to compete in freeride and Big Mountain events. The programme will build on fundamental skills in free skiing offering a programme to support athlete’s needs to compete at a Junior Level in New Zealand.

Schedule

Team TC schedule will start with an information evening where parents can meet the coaches, collect uniforms and ask questions.
The on-snow training will kick off the first day of the School Holidays at 9am on the Platter lift.

Athletes may choose between 1 to 2 days training, and additional days on Thursdays for 6 weeks (in line with school skiing days). Drop in options are for 3-week blocks only, at the Head Coaches discretion. Coach may arrange additional days training at $130 per day where no less than 4 kids attend.

Begins at the start of NZ school holidays 7 July 2018.

Coaches

Head Coach – Sam Lee

Sam Lee has built a successful freeride career on a ski racing foundation. He has tallied up solid competition results and has been named New Zealand Freeride Athlete of the Year two years in a row. His results include a podium in Alaska in 2017 which secured Sam spot on the Freeride World Tour in 2018.

Sam has been an instructor and freeride coach for several years. Alongside coaching Team TC he will be coaching the NZ Freeride Team. He brings enthusiasm, creativity and passion for progressing his athlete’s talents. His competitive background means he has an eye for strategy, safety and choosing high scoring lines for competition. Sam brings fresh eyes and professionalism to this Head Freeride Coach role.

Sam will coach alongside Louis Charnaud. Since leaving school Louis has pursued his passion of skiing, teaching and filming. He has instructed all over the world from New Zealand, Japan, USA and now Switzerland. Louis also competes in Big Mountain skiing in the Freeride World Qualifier events. He loves all aspects of skiing, from ripping fresh groomers first thing in the morning to hiking in the back country in search of the perfect line.
