Guide to Wanaka & the Southern Lakes

Planning your Wanaka ski holiday? We're here to help with an introduction to holidaying in the Southern lakes. Check out our guides to Wanaka and skiing Queenstown.  Have a look at some of your Wanaka ski accommodation options or choose one of our family ski holiday packages or luxury Wanaka ski holidays.

The Southern Lakes -- A Year-round Destination

Between the gold rush and the snow rush (about 100 years) Central Otago grew slowly. Initially it was a region of farms and orchards. But there was always a trickle of people coming inland to build summer baches around the shores of the lakes and enjoy the settled summer weather.  That has all changed in the last decade or two, though, as the Southern Lakes has become the South Island's premier summer and winter tourism magnet.

Staying in Wanaka

Wanaka is the place to stay to get the most out of skiing or riding Treble Cone.  The drive from Queenstown is very manageable but the driving can get tiresome.

Nestled in the heart of the Southern Lakes, Wanaka is one of the world's most beautiful winter resort towns situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka and surrounded by snowcapped mountains.

Enjoy Treble Cone slopes by day and Wanaka's après ski will keep you well entertained by night. Whether it is relaxing in soothing hot pools, sampling local cuisine and wines at sumptuous restaurants or enjoying the local nightlife, Wanaka has something for everyone.

Winter in Wanaka

With a ski season from late June until early October, a winter holiday in the lakeside alpine resort of Wanaka doesn't get much better for Snowsports  enthusiasts with the local resorts of Treble Cone and Cardrona giving visitors a world class downhill experience.  Take a helicopter to the beckoning mountains for an untouched experience.

Add in the slopestyle features of the Snowpark built to an international standard and the Snowfarms cross country trails and you have the most diverse range of winter sports anywhere in New Zealand.

Resorts are approximately a half hour from the town centre with the last few kilometres on unsealed (gravel) surfaces and subject to alpine weather conditions. Chains should be carried and four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended, especially for families.
