Keep Winter Cool at Treble Cone

Treble Cone leads the New Zealand ski industry in efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of future guests and staff with the support of Sustainable Wanaka. We’re doing our bit to help stop global warming with the following initiatives, and here’s some ways for skiers and riders to help too.

Work with the experts
Treble Cone have been working with Sustainable Wanaka since October 2006 to ensure future guests and staff can make a real difference by creating and maintaining a sustainable lifestyle at Treble Cone and within the Wanaka community. You too can make a difference; there are more great tips at www.sustainablewanaka.co.nz to incorporate sustainability into your day to day living. Sustainable Wanaka is a charitable trust with a long term view. Its current focus is on tourism and working with local businesses to implement environmentally friendly practices.

Recycle
In 2007 Treble Cone introduced recycling on the mountain; guests can now separate waste at their favourite ski area like they do at home with curb side recycling.

No more wasted Watts
At Treble Cone we have streamlined our power consumption and saved 11% power usage this year, compared with the 2006, we’re ensuring that no Watt is wasted! All staff and public are encouraged to switch off lights and plugs at the wall, when not in use, to stop those Watts from wandering. You have the opportunity to choose your power company – some may be more sustainable than others, ask your current company how they are currently sustainable and what their policies are for the future.

Share a ride
In 2007 guests and staff all worked together to greatly improve car pooling with an average 3.8 passengers per vehicle, up one passenger on 2006 stats! The Treble Cone fuel consumption has improved too, dropping 15% on the consumption in 2006.

When heading up the mountain we suggest you continue to car pool or travel on organised mountain transport services, you’ll save petrol money, reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and reduce CO2 emissions at the same time. Plus, with fewer vehicles in the Treble Cone car park, an added bonus is that there will be shorter walk from your car to the base buildings!

There are two ‘Hitching Post’ in Wanaka where it is safer for cars to pull over;
- Ardmore Street – past Dungarvon Street (adjacent to the skateboard park) and
- Mount Aspiring Road, west of MacDougall Street.

Drop your drag
Take your winter roof rack off your car at the end of the season, reducing drag means less fuel to power your car, lowering both your fuel costs and CO2 emissions. While you’re at it, when buying your next car, pick the least-polluting, most efficient vehicle that meets your needs. There have been great advances in hybrids recently, check out the some comparisons at www.consumer.org.nz and www.aa.co.nz.
